OVERCOMING THE ODDS TO TAKE PART IN RUNHER CHAMPION CHALLENGE

IRISH SILVER MEDALLIST THROWER, KATHY HETHERINGTON, CELBRATES OVERCOMING SPINAL INJURY WITH HER PHYSIOTHERAPY TEAM TAKING PART IN RUNHER’S CHAMPION CHALLENGE ON OCTOBER 9TH 2011.

When 19 year old Kathy Hetherington fractured her spine after being struck by a car in 2005, she believed that life would never be the same again. Kathy has not only overcome her injuries, but has since become an Irish Athletics silver medallist for the discus.

To celebrate her recovery to health, she has decided to join her physiotherapy team, from Apex Clinic, to run 10 kilometres in the Champion Challenge at this year’s RunHer on October 9th 2011.

 Kathy Hetherington said:

“When I fractured my spine, I believed that I would never be able to compete in athletics again. Worse still, I thought I would have to learn to live with the ongoing pain caused by my injuries.
“Thanks to the fantastic team at Apex Clinic, I have now completely recovered from my injuries. I was able to compete and win the silver medal for the discus at this year’s Irish Athletics Championships in June.

“I have also been so inspired by my experiences that I have chosen to study physiotherapy at the University of Ulster, so that I can help other people recover from injury in the future.”

Apex Clinic Director of Physiotherapy and busy mum of four, Rebecca Nelson, said:

“It is an honour to have Kathy join Apex Clinic’s first ever team for RunHer on October 9th.  Kathy is an inspiration as someone who has fought back from serious injury and has turned a negative experience into something very positive.

“Our team includes all our female staff members, Kathy Hetherington and my ten year old daughter, Jessica, who is a keen tennis player and is looking forward to joining in the fun.

“We have entered the 10K Champion Challenge as a great opportunity to get together and celebrate the success of our very own champion, Kathy. We are really looking forward to the unique atmosphere of RunHer and hope that we will all complete the challenge!”
