Stamp out neck pain for good!

In this high tech world where we carry our gadgets with us 24/7 and are glued to our phones and laptops for large chunks of the day, it is no coincidence that one in four of us suffers from neck pain. This month,Rebecca Nelson, shares some practical tips on how to reduce neck pain and tells us why neck pain should never be accepted as part of the normal ageing process or normal ‘wear and tear’.

Are you sitting comfortably?
It’s easy to forget about your posture when you are busy. We recommend whilst working, you ensure that the top of your screen is at eye level. Sit with your back reclined backwards, approximately 30-35 degrees back from the vertical position, with your elbows close to your body, rather than with arms outstretched, or lifted up to reach the keyboard.Your chair must always be pulled in under the desk, so that your forearms can rest on the desk edge.

Don’t let your laptop damage your neck
Although laptops have freed us up to work where we want when we want, their design has proved disastrous for our bodies, leading to almost certain future neck and spinal pain.

If you are working on a laptop for long periods, we advise you use a detachable keyboard so that your forearms can be rested on the edge of your desk. Try to avoid bad habits such as working with your laptop on your knee or on the arm of the sofa whilst watching TV. Don’t forget to take breaks from your technology and get up and move around regularly.

‘Text Neck’: a major cause of neck injury
‘Text Neck’ is a type of neck pain caused by overuse of mobile phones, tablets, e-readers and other mobile devices. The unnatural positions these devices make us adopt are very bad for our necks, causing pinched nerves, compressed and herniated discs. Try resting your elbows on your lower ribs and hold your mobile device up, just below eye level.
